My wife and I were driving at about 55 mph and next thing we know we heard a very loud bang and then my rear end locked up and about caused us to hit the car beside us once I was able to pull over safely I got out and found my driveshaft separated from the rear end so I had it towed to the local mechanic and he had informed me that my pinion nut had came loose and backed out that it was not properly torqued I have contacted the dealership and the corporation of ram and neither will own up to it even though they informed me there was a pending recall for my year model for that pinion nut and they also informed me that I do have the same rear end as the 05 model that did have a recall on the pinion nut which is the 9. The failure mileage was approximately 143,000. The manufacturer stated that the recall notice was sent to the contact in 2015 however, the contact stated that the notice was never received. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the recall would not cover the extensive damages, and only the recall part would be covered. The dealer stated that the contact waited too long to have the recall repair performed however, a repair appointment was scheduled. The contact took the vehicle to don weir's reno Dodge ram fiat (77, located at 700 kietzke ln, reno, nv 89502). The contact stated that he did not receive a recall notification. The technician notified the contact of NHTSA campaign number: 14v796000 (power train). The vehicle was later towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that a loose pinion nut caused the driveshaft and the yoke to detach. The contact called roadside assistance and had the vehicle towed to the residence. The engine was running, but the vehicle stopped moving. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. In addition, the driveshaft detached and became stuck underneath the vehicle. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle vibrated abnormally and decelerated without warning. Tl the contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. 5A can go to 4A, 6A or 5B smooth as a knife through butter. (Top) Here’s the workspace of FilmPack 4. This is differentiated from “Toning,” which gives the usual sepia, cyanotype, etc. One interesting thing is that when you work in black and white the options are different than when in color, something that becomes apparent in the “Filter” effect, which works more like putting a glass filter over the lens when shooting panchromatic film, such as a red filter increasing contrast, etc. Overall, both score well in regard to customization. Again, I found the DxO workspace to be a bit more compact, although scrolling down through the options in the right-side panel in Exposure 5 requires no great effort. I then reduced the Opacity on the APX 25 Layer to get this low-saturation look (Above).īoth programs allow for many, many modifications of presets using the right-side panel, and both allow your modifications to be saved as your own custom preset, something that comes in handy when doing batch processing. (The program has a very nice selection of border effects in both presets and modifiers.) When I clicked on Save it loaded both as Layers in Photoshop. I applied the Agfa APX 25 film preset along with a border frame. Here’s the original image (Top) and the final in Exposure 5. Again, choosing the three-column preview option helps alleviate that somewhat. The default Exposure 5 effects menu took a lot more time to work through, as opening each grouping (B&W, Color, with numerous subsets) in essence pushed down the other effects so it made for more scrolling when “fishing” for the right look. The DxO preset bar, with groups shown at the base of the workspace and selected by tabs, and then the various effects chosen via a slider, was, for me, an easier way to work. Once selected, the image pops right up in the main workspace.Īs to the effects menu, both showed all the variations quickly on the effects panel, although I found the DxO interface less cluttered, something I partially solved by choosing the three-column view of the effects in Exposure 5. Both programs worked quickly and had an almost instantaneous readout of the various preset effects. I started with Adobe Bridge first and then dragged-and-dropped an image into both programs’ “stand-alone” mode. There is no browser in either program, and although that would be ideal I’m sure it would also jack up the price. The stand-alone versions allow images to be opened via your directory or dragged-and-dropped from a browser. PSD in from the directory or browser) and offer a large number of preset customization options that you can apply individually to images or save as a customized preset for other work. Both programs have similar workspaces, although the left-side preset panel of Exposure 5 differs from the baseline groupings and image option crawl/slider at the bottom of the space in FilmPack 4 before and after split views very quick previews of selected effects failure to handle Raw. I worked with a MacBook Pro and base my observations on using that OS. This is a great aid in expanding creative image options even further. When you apply an effect or even two in Exposure 5 each becomes a Layer that you can do more work on, such as Opacity, Layer Masks, etc. Check pricing at the end of this article and each company’s website for system compatibility. I will not revisit that discussion here, although the near concomitant release of two such programs, Alien Skin’s Exposure 5 and DxO’s FilmPack 4, makes it tempting to do so.īoth companies justify version upgrades with claimed improved workability and “interface ease of use” additional presets (DxO sells an “Essential” and “Expert” edition, with the latter having more options and extras, while Exposure 5 has more preset options overall) stand-alone versions and plug-in functionality with the usual suspects and a preset “search” that allows you to describe what you might be after so that the program can recommend some options. On the other side, I admire their offering programs that open up a raft of image expressions in easy to attain fashion. It strikes me that an increasingly small proportion of folks relate to them. On one side, I am unsure why the designers use visual references to types of film for their preset IDs. I have always had mixed feelings about so-called “film simulation” software, programs that offer one-click presets that add effects and options for manipulating digital images. In doing this Abrams and his team of researchers took advantage of a variable that is random: the cases that judges are assigned. Rather than directly trying to answer how biased, or not biased, judges are, we looked at the variability across judges in their sentences between black and white defendants, which we call the racial gap," he says. "What we did is change the question a little bit. So to figure out if biased judging actually played a role in this, Abrams came up with a novel workaround. That same year, black males were incarcerated at six-and-a-half times the rate of white males. Abrams notes in his study that though 13.2 percent of the population is black, in 2008, 38 percent of sentenced inmates in the United States were black. There are numbers that are certainly indisputable. Making sure that everyone gets the worst outcome is not going to necessarily address the problems. "In this case the jury did give a conviction, but there's evidence that black defendants are more likely to be convicted than white defendants." Then there's the ability to post bail pre-trial, which research from the Sentencing Project shows leads to better trial outcomes, and to hire a defender. It snowballs as someone goes through the system." This starts with the likelihood of being arrested. "There are racial disparities at each stage of the process. "Prosecutors are likely to charge people more harshly if they're black than if they're white," she says. Ghandnoosh explains that this illuminates how racial bias pervades every stage of the criminal justice system. The differing charges brought against the two defendants-one white, one black-is an injustice itself, but it's one that's important to distinguish. The prosecution originally tried to go after the 20-year-old for two counts of rape, but those charges were dropped, baffling everyone who has read the testimony from the victim-who was found behind a dumpster without underwear-and the police reports. Banks was charged with forcible rape and kidnapping, while Turner wasn't even charged for rape. But the difference in their sentencing outcomes comes down to their charges and not just bias. Banks's case is appallingly tragic: He was tried as an adult when he was a minor and similarly had no prior record. "Some of the other kinds of crime that I've seen people compare it to are just of a different nature." For example, ex-football player Brian Banks, who served five years in prison for a rape he did not commit, has been held up as a foil to Turner. "There's a whole variety of crimes that would fall under sexual assault and rape, so it's important to compare to something similar," Ghandnoosh says. Nazgol Ghandnoosh, a research analyst with the Sentencing Project, also mentions that when comparing the race of defendants and their sentences, it's important to note the charges. That can help, but it can't eliminate the basic problem." In other words, it's been impossible to tell how race affects sentencing because it's impossible to isolate it from the other factors that could be at play in the courtroom, like "how you dress, how you speak, and other things that might affect the sentence length that aren't necessarily about race but are probably correlated with it." "The way most studies go about it is to try to run a regression on control variables that they think might impact the outcome besides race. "The basic problem that plagues almost every study that tries to look at the role of race in criminal sentencing is that you can't randomly assign race, because that's what you do when you want to do an experiment," Abrams told me. In his 2012 study, " Do Judges Vary in Their Treatment of Race?," David Abrams, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, points this out. Read more: Biased Policy May Be Putting Domestic Violence Victims in Jail However, statistical attempts at teasing out racial bias in courts have been surprisingly non-definitive. As witnessed by the "affluenza teen" who received a 720-day jail sentence for killing four people while driving drunk, this certainly seems true. If Turner were black, they say, he would be under the jail. The ruling has spurred a recall effort against Persky that now has over 200,000 backers, and commenters on Twitter and bloggers have pointed to Turner's light sentencing, which he intends to appeal, as a sign of our criminal justice system's inherent bias in favor of the white and privileged. I think he will not be a danger to others," Judge Aaron Persky said in his decision. "A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him. California and Washington are fully within PT. As a general rule of thumb, a change of 15° of longitude should result in a time difference of 1 hour. Many countries have more than one time zone. The following map displays the standard time zones across the world. As can be seen, although there is a general standard throughout the world for defining time zones, it is still highly dependent on the country, and is subject to change. Russia on the other hand, is divided into 11 time zones, though at one point this was reduced to 9 time zones. For example, China and India only use a single time zone even though they are countries that encompass far larger an area than 15° of longitude. Generally, a time change of 1 hour is required with each 15° change of longitude, but this does not necessarily always happen. Nepal, the final holdout, did not adopt a standard offset of UTC until 1956, and even then, has a less common offset of UTC+5:45. It wasn't until 1929 before most countries adopted hourly time zones. Time zones throughout the world vary, and used to vary even more than they currently do. Most commonly, UTC is offset by an hour, but in some cases, the offset can be a half-hour or quarter-hour, such as in the case of UTC+06:30 and UTC+12:45. UTC offset can range from UTC-12:00 to UTC+14:00. Generally, time zones are defined as + or - an integer number of hours in relation to UTC for example, UTC-05:00, UTC+08:00, and so on. UTC breaks time into days, hours, minutes, and seconds, where days are usually defined in terms of the Gregorian calendar. Most time zones that are on land are offset from UTC. UTC is not dependent on daylight saving time (DST), though some countries switch between time zones during their DST period, such as the United Kingdom using British Summer Time in the summer months. UTC, which is based on highly precise atomic clocks and the Earth's rotation, is the new standard of today. Although GMT used to be a time standard, it is now mainly used as the time zone for certain countries in Africa and Western Europe. Although GMT and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) essentially reflect the same time, GMT is a time zone, while UTC is a time standard that is used as a basis for civil time and time zones worldwide. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory located in Greenwich, London, considered to be located at a longitude of zero degrees.
